Full Description

A foundation optimization model has been created to determine the preferred foundation insulation levels for 13 cities around the United States. Basements, crawl spaces, and slabon- grade foundations have been evaluated through use of a numerical simulation. The results of this analysis have been incorporated as heat flux data into a comprehensive building simulation model, DOE-2.1C. The procedure is described in detail in two companion papers (Shen et al. 1988 and Huang et al. 1988). The derivation of the economic optimization model is described in Parker (1986). This paper briefly describes the results from the use of the optimization model with the simulation results.
