Full Description

In the US regulatory climate of renewed focus onwater quality in the distribution system, the role of modelinghas become increasingly important. The authorsreview the current state of model calibration guidelinesin the United States and compare US practices withcalibration and model development in the United Kingdom. This research also provides for the first time statisticalcalibration accuracies for several extended periodsimulation (EPS) water distribution models. Seven casemodels were developed and calibrated using only trial-and-error methods (iterative calibration). The authors demonstrate what is required toachieve a calibrated water distribution systemmodel and provide a benchmark for calibrationaccuracies for models used in long-term planning.Utilities can use this information as a guide to evaluatecalibration accuracies of their own models. The benefit of improved calibration accuraciesmust be weighed against the costs of obtainingadditional and more-precise field data and theexpense of efforts to improve model calibrationaccuracies. Includes 8 references, tables, figures.
