This paper provides an overview of major environmental requirements and issues relevant to energy facilities for district heating. The paper will emphasize issues related to air quality requirements and issues related to combustion of alternative fuel such as solid waste. Major topics include: (1) environmental review, (2) air quality, (3) solid waste, and (4) emissions and ash information on alternative fuels. The paper is oriented toward giving the reader a general understanding of the variety of environmental issues that may need to be addressed in implementing a combustion facility.
